About this course:

Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector is designed to introduce trainee teachers to the lifelong learning sector. This can provide a threshold license to teach that can lead to further training or be a stepping stone into teaching. This is the new 12-credit PTLLS – replacing the previous 6-credit course.

What you will study:

This can provide a threshold license to teach that can lead to further training or be a stepping stone into teaching. You will study one course (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) in which you will:

  • Understand your own role, responsibilities and boundaries in relation to teaching
  • Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches in your specialist area
  • Demonstrate session planning skills
  • Understand how to deliver inclusive sessions which motivate learners
  • Understand the use of different assessment methods and the need for record keeping.

This course does not entitle candidates to teach in the primary or secondary schools sector.

How you will be assessed:

You will produce a portfolio of evidence which is made up of various Course Engagement Tasks set by the course team. You will take part in class discussions and practical work and have individual written tasks to complete. You will be expected to spend time each week writing up and completing your course work. You will also deliver a 15 minute micro-teach to the rest of the group. Full details of this will be discussed with the course tutor at the beginning of the course.

Entry requirements:

You must have a subject specialism that you want to teach and hold a relevant subject specific qualification at Level 3 or higher. If you are being sponsored for this course by an employer where you are currently working as a trainer you will be required to produce a letter from the employer that states what your role encompasses. All candidates must have GCSE/O Level English and Mathematics Grades A*- C (or recognised equivalent). If you do not have English and Maths qualifications you will be asked to undertake an initial assessment to determine your suitability for the course. All candidates are required to undertake a short written test at interview in addition to their existing qualifications.
